Castor Oil Description for Phenol-Based Reactions:

Castor oil is a natural triglyceride primarily composed of ricinoleic acid (approximately 90%), a monounsaturated, 18-carbon fatty acid with a hydroxyl group on the 12th carbon. This hydroxyl group imparts reactivity that makes castor oil suitable for chemical modifications, including condensation reactions with phenol.

In phenol-based syntheses, such as the preparation of phenolic resins or plasticizers, castor oil acts as a hydroxyl-rich reactant, enabling esterification or etherification with phenol or its derivatives. The presence of both hydroxyl and ester functional groups in castor oil allows for tailored polymer structures or crosslinking, enhancing thermal stability, flexibility, and hydrophobicity in final products.
